Samsung Gear VR at IFA 2014

We’ve heard it rumoured before, but now SamMobile.com confirmed the existence of Gear VR. Samsung are set to announce and launch its own virtual reality headset at the IFA 2014  Conferences in September.

SamMobile.com reports:

“Samsung has developed a modular design, which allows the user to dock in a Galaxy device into the Gear VR using USB 3.0. Virtual reality effect is achieved through head tracking, and instead of equipping the headset with sensors, Gear VR makes use of the smartphone’s accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power to track head motion. Also, as Samsung’s flagship devices use AMOLED display technology, we can surely say that users will have an excellent, flawless and immersive virtual reality experience”

An interesting feature that differentiates Gear VR from the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus headsets, is a see-through button. This feature uses the smartphone’s rear-facing camera sensor, and allows users to stream the real world back to them, making it less necessary to remove the device. There is also a touch pad located directly under the see-through button, which will allow users to navigate through the user interface on the Galaxy smartphone.

Gear VR is much more comfortable to wear, thanks to the elastic head band, and soft padded ergonomic cushions on each side of the device.

Samsung has developed software in partnership with Facebook’s Oculus Rift team, with a dedicated selection of application built for the headset including Theatre, 360 Player, and Gallery application.

We can’t wait to get to see the device first hand this September!
