Google, in collaboration with Swiss pharmaceutical giant, Novartis, has developed a contact lens for diabetics, and people whose eyes are losing the ability to focus. The contact lenses contain non-invasive sensors, which analyse tear fluid in the eye, and provide constant measurements of a person’s blood glucose levels.
Information about blood sugar levels could be uploaded to smartphone devices, and used by doctors and patients, to monitor the data almost in real-time.
The lenses may also offer vision correction for people with presbyopia, an age-related eye condition that affects billions, making it difficult to focus on objects nearby. This new technology could restore the eye’s natural auto-focus.
Google founder Sergey Brin wrote:
“This is a key step for us to go beyond the confines of traditional disease management, starting with the eye. Our dream is to use the latest technology in the miniaturization of electronics to help improve the quality of life for millions of people”
In the upcoming years Google “vision” will be overstated and comfortable smart contact lenses will come to market.
